Real January prices, 1962 to 2022 (per-share stock history is not freely available before 1962). Stocks include reinvested dividends where Yahoo Finance provides them; the index-fund benchmark is Robert Shiller's S&P composite with dividends; bonds are built from OECD government yields (a ten-year bond earns its yield less the effect of yield changes), foreign bonds are in local currency; commodities are World Bank spot prices with no storage cost or yield; houses are Shiller's national index with no rent or upkeep. Cash earns the three-month Treasury bill rate. Inflation is Shiller's CPI.

    How to play

You have $100,000 and a stretch of history. At each stop, pick where it goes: real companies, gold, bonds, houses, or cash. Then time jumps and you see what happened. The end year is shown at the top.

All prices are real. Only companies that were listed at the time are offered, so early rounds have a short list.
